Franchise Tag Deadline Tomorrow

With the Tag deadline coming up in less than 24 hrs, what's ahead? Many teams are debating putting the pricey franchise tag on certain players looking to strike it big in free agency. One of those players in Olivier Vernon of the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are being slow to make a decision says Profootballtalk.com
Per a league source, the Dolphins plan to sleep on it one more night, taking full advantage of the tag deadline. Which makes sense, since it’s a deadline-driven business.
Vernon wil be on Bucs GM Jason Lichts radar no doubt about it if he makes it to free agency and he will be awaiting tomorrows decision. Vernon may be the best edge rusher on the market if he does make it to free agency, which would most likely push Licht away due to such a high price tag. Licht also has a big decision himself with the Bucs own Doug Martin. Sources close to the Bucs have stated that it is highly unlikely Doug gets the tag, via Pewterreport.com
However, the likelihood of that happening is almost zero, as the price to keep Martin in Tampa Bay would be in the one-year, $12 million range. That’s a steep price for a running back with two excellent seasons sandwiched around two years of less than 500 yards rushing and multiple injuries.
Although we all love Doug and what he has done here in Tampa, Jason Licht is looking out for the best interest of the team and paying a running back upwards to 12 million a year is not that. Especially when Licht has his own hand pick guy (Charles Sims) waiting behind Doug. I still believe Doug will end up signing back later but anything can happen once large dollar signs begin to be thrown around.

The Strength of This Draft Is on Defense

The NFL scouting combine has concluded and after thinking about what I have seen the past few days I'm pretty excited to see what the Bucs do in this upcoming draft. The word from scouts and general managers were that this draft was heavy on the defensive side of the ball, and I would say the combine definitely proved that to be true.  Former scout Daniel Jeremiah agrees that its a good year to draft defense.

Watching yesterday and today, it just seemed like big name after big name was showing up, and it was really exciting to watch. Potential targets for the Bucs really showed up as Noah Spence, Shaq Lawson, Leonard Floyd, and Vernon Hargreaves all had strong showings. I thought Lawson and Floyd really helped their draft stock and cemented their first round status. They were both more fluid and athletic than I thought they were going to be as both ran really good 40's with 4.7 and 4.6 respectively. Both would be targets for the Bucs if they decide trading down is the best option.

With that being said I still feel its going to be Noah Spence at 9, he is the best edge rusher in this draft and the depth at defensive end is just not as strong like it is at defensive tackle. Spence could be that special edge guy the Bucs have been looking for the past decade. Spence has the quickness and just understands how to pass rush. All I know is Jason Licht and his crew have to be pretty excited about this defensive draft class, and it should help the teams woes on that side of the ball. The Bucs have multiple options for their first pick and should get a really good player on that side of the ball. Here is video per nflbreakdown.com showing Spence's quickness of the edge.

My Job Is to Eliminate You!

It wasn't too long ago when many draft experts had former Clemson CB Mackensie Alexander going in the top ten of their mock drafts. Some had him going 9th overall to Tampa, which at the time seemed like the logical choice, now most have the Bucs taking Noah Spence. For some reason Alexander has fallen out of the first round in a lot of mocks now which makes no sense as Alexander is still a top corner in this draft class. The knock on Alexander is he didn't have any interceptions in his career at Clemson, but the case can be made that the ball wasn't thrown his way very often. That's what good cover corners do, they take half of the field away. He is his opinion on the matter per NFL.com.
"I had some opportunities to come up with some picks in my career. I didn't come up with them at the end of the day. I'm taking it like a man. In a lot of my situations, I wasn't challenged very much," Alexander said. "A lot of quarterbacks on teams stayed away from me, and that was their game plan, really. That's it, really. That's how I answer that."

Alexander at 5'11 195lbs is a fiery competitor who excels in man coverage and is considered a lock down cover corner. He has good reaction quickness, plays physical, and has knack for taking his guy completely out of the game. Alexander doesn't lack confidence as he said today he is the best corner in this draft class per NFL.com.
"I'm 22, but I'm ready to compete with anybody. There's nobody more dedicated than me, who's put more time in or is more of a competitor than me. ... I'm here prepared. I'm telling you I'm the best corner in this draft class," Alexander said.
I love Alexander's swagger and confidence, he loves to compete and is the type of guy you want to have on your team. Alexander only allowed 33% completion percentage and 0 Tds allowed against him. If this guy were to fall to the second round, and the Bucs have already taken someone like Noah Spence, I would not hesitate to take Alexander if I was Jason Licht. The guy is a winner, and this team needs more guys like this kid. Here is Alexander's best quote from today per Matt Miller.

Toughness Shows

Gerald McCoy took to instagram earlier this week to unveil his injured hand which he had surgically repaired late in the season.

McCoy obviously was in pain after injuring his hand in week 12 versus the Colts, yet he only missed one game and continued to produce and be the destructive defensive tackle that he is. The Bucs need to get this man some help! The man has done everything he can to help this team and defense as a whole but he is just one man. Here is a quote showing the passion McCoy has for this team, via Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.
“I had an injury first half of the game, got it looked at, kept playing, was necessary to keep playing,” McCoy said, “I had it looked at after the game, had a small procedure, and hopefully will be out there on Sunday.”

Prospect Watch: Ronald Blair

Last year around this time, the bucs fell in love with a player from Hobart college, who went on to have a pretty good rookie season with the bucs. That guy is starting right guard Ali Marpet, who put on a show at last years combine and went on to become Jason Licht's favorite player out of that entire draft class. Now heading into this years draft, there could be another small school guy that Jason Licht has his eyes on, and that is Appalachian St. De Ronald Blair.

Blair at 6'2 284 uses his long arms to easily hold up his opponent to stop the run, or swim by them to get to the quarterback. He is strong at the point of attack, and has great motor never giving up on the play. He is still raw in his pass rush technique, but shows promise in that area and has a decent power rush to build from. His former defensive line coach Mark Ivey had high praise for Blair and thinks the sky is the limit for him, per theappalachianonline.com.
“He is absolutely explosive and he is as strong as you are going to get for that position,” Ivey said. “He’s got size, speed and good football savvy on the field. When he is off the field he is always focusing on film study, knowledge of the defense, asking questions, and his leadership ability is fantastic.”
Blair is easily becoming one of the favorites in this draft class, and is starting to rise up team draft boards. He showed off that strength today with 32 bench press reps of 225lbs at the scouting combine, and which didn't surprise draft analyst Dane Bugler whom I respect his opinion very highly.
Blair could easily be a day 2 pick now, and will have all eyes on him tomorrow at the combine for his on field workouts in Indy. This guy could be the next small school steal for Jason Licht and his staff. bucs fans keep an eye on Ronald Blair, I think his name is going to be talked about a lot as we get closer to the draft.

What's Best About Having A Stable QB

Now that the Bucs have their franchise QB with Jameis Winston, what are the advantages? The best advantage is being able to build around him in knowing he's the staple of the offense. When looking NFL GMs start their search to improve their rosters and the first position they look at is Quarterback. In the NFL these days you go as far as your QB will take you.

The Bucs are more than comfortable with Jameis at the helm leading the team to bigger and better things, so how does that help the Bucs out? Look at the teams ahead of us begging for a franchise QB who will reach and bypass better players in hoping they get a "franchise" QB. Looking at the draft there are 3 possible spots before the Bucs where QBs may be taken. Thats the Browns at 2, Cowboys at 4 and 49ers at 7. All of which either don't have a QB (da browns) or have an aging QB or one that doesn't want to be there (Cowboys/49ers).

So picture players that should be taken higher due to game tape and numbers that they have put up being dropped 3 spots, just because other NFL teams don't have their lead man under center. As a buccaneer fan I'm more than happy. Let players like Joey Bosa, Myles Jack and Jalen Ramsey fall, just so other teams can reach for what they hope their future is. Winston has put his imprint on this Buccaneer team and has without a doubt proven that is the lead dog and everyone will follow. Sit back and watch as talent falls into Jason Lichts hands.

Spence Coming Clean

Top edge rushing prospect Noah Spence took to the podium today to face all the questions media wanted to ask about his past of drug addiction to ecstasy and being kicked out of Ohio State. Per NFL.com, Chase Goodbread.
(I'm) still being drug tested to this day," Spence said. "(I'm drug tested) every week now. I was on every drug-test list at Eastern Kentucky. After I failed at Ohio State I was drug tested twice a week until I left there."
Spence seems as if he has cleaned his life up and is looking forward to the future and realizing the potential career path he's about to walk into. Jason Licht and all bucs front office officials will no doubt go more in depth into analyzing how clean Spence really is but he's already taking the right first steps to prove his case to NFL teams. Edge rusher is without a doubt the number one need for the buccaneers and that fits right into what Spence provides.

Prospect Watch: Demarcus Robinson

Demarcus Robinson is one of the less talked about receivers in this draft, but probably one of the most talented athletes in this class. Robinson had an up and down career at the University of Florida, where he was suspended 4 times and was inconsistent at times in his play. His best season was his sophomore year in which he had 53 receptions for 810 yards and 7 touchdowns and that was with poor quaterback play. Now he has a chance to prove doubters wrong at the scouting combine and live up to the high expectations coming out of high school. High profile analyst Tony Pauline offered some high praise about Robinson a few days ago.
"On film, Robinson grades as a top-15 prospect and would challenge Laquon Treadwell as the draft’s best receiver"
That is immense praise, but is accurate as Robinson, who is 6'2 205lbs has all the tools, he has the speed, route running, and playmaking ability that coaches look for in a wide receiver.  Robinson said yesterday that his actions at Florida were selfish and he is ready for a fresh start. That fresh start could take place with the Bucs as they were one of the teams to speak with him according to Jenna Laine.
For the Bucs, Robinson would be great value anywhere after the 5th round, and could up being the steal of the draft. With having a quaterback like Jameis Winston throwing to him, Robinson could end up being a solid number two receiver within time.

Why Would Licht Let Martin Leave?

Jason Licht has built a reputation for being the smartest man in the room and has proven that with his great drafts and also by surviving the Glazers first firings. So why would he let Martin get out of Tampa? Licht may be taking a page from his old team the Patriots, by letting a player go for the better of the team. The Patriots have let many "A" list players go that have gone away to other teams. A few to name are Wes Welker, Richard Seymour, Mike Vrabel, Asante Samuel and the list only continues. These are players that still were good yet would crush the teams overall ability to be fully complete due to contract issues. Licht is no dummy and is a true GM in that he plans ahead evident by this quote via Joe Kania.
With that said Licht is looking 3 years ahead. Was the pick of Charles Sims 2 years ago already a plan towards the future? Most likely so, as in todays NFL there are usually 2 back committees instead of one work horse. Martin although a good player is not the caliber of an Adrian Peterson and doesn't deserve the same cap number at all. If he wants anything more than 7 million the Bucs would most likely look elsewhere.

Looking forward to the 2017 draft, the running back position is littered with high profile talents like Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, Nick Chubb and Christian McCaffery, all of whom should be considered 1st round selections but will fall due to how much the running back position has been devalued. Any of which would be a great addition if Martin did end up leaving. Jameis has gone on record as to say how much he values Martin but also how much he likes another running back. Via 620 WDAE

Licht has the best interest of the Bucs first and wont jeopardize the future of the franchise for one player. You better believe he has planned and thought a lot of this through and is waiting for his plan to play out. Up to Martin to see if he truly wants to be a Buc or play for the money.

Signs Point Toward Martin Not Coming Back

Some potential sad news broke today that if a deal wasn't made with Doug Martin before free agency begins, he just might sign else where. Per trusted source Roy Cummings
Doug has made it evident that he loves it here in Tampa, yet it looks like Tampa isn't offering enough money to keep him here. Martin may be trying to play hard ball with the media to try and get more money for himself but thats just it, its all about money. You can't blame him for wanting to get paid for such an amazing season he just had and knowing he doesn't have many years left. If Martin wants a number that is way to expensive for Licht and the Bucs success, he won't do it. I love Doug and everything he has done for this buccaneer team but I side with Licht. If his contract gets to pricey and is detrimental to the team, let him walk and give the guy you drafted a shot.

Mario Williams To Be Cut?

The pressing need for pass rush is evident for this buccaneer team and that was reinforced yesterday by Jason Licht stating that this draft will be heavy on the defensive side of the ball. Before the draft gets here, Licht will have to decide on options in free agency. By the looks of it there will soon be another veteran defensive end looking for a new job soon. Per Tim Graham, sports reporter for the Buffalo news
Former first overall pick Mario Williams has had many issues with Rex Ryans 3-4 defensive scheme and wants to commit to being a pure edge rusher again. He is the prototypical 4-3 defensive end standing 6'6 weighing 292 and athletic enough to speed past offensive linemen. Though 31 years old Williams still has plenty left in the tank as he's one year removed from a 14.5 sack season. Last year Rex Ryan installed his 3-4 offense which made Williams turn into a standing linebacker which he is not made for. Williams will without a doubt be the best defensive end in free agency, given that he is cut. Jason Licht should give him a call if that time comes.

Leonard Floyd Possible Target For the Bucs?

I have mention before that trading down could be a real option for the Bucs, and one player could really make sense if that is the case. That would be Georgia hybrid defender Leonard Floyd, who is a tweener type, provides great athleticism and has a non stop motor. According to Charlie Campbell of Walterfootball.com, the Bucs have shown interest in the former Georgia standout.
"I know there's some interest there" with Leonard Floyd and the Buccaneers.
The main issue with Floyd is his size as he stands at 6'4 but only weighs 231lbs which limits him as a run defender and in the NFL would start off as a sub package player. Floyd has massive potential as a pass rusher but to become a more functional player, he needs to live in a cafeteria and weight room to put on more size and strength. If Floyd can do that, he could be one hell of a player, the guy has sideline to sideline speed, and already has some go to pass rush moves. Right now Floyd is projected to be a late first round pick, so I think if the Bucs could trade with a team like the Texans who are need of Qb, that could be a possibility if the Bucs really like Floyd as a player. Here is Mike Mayock's take on Floyd as a player, per macon.com:
"Leonard Floyd is a polarizing figure from Georgia," Mayock said. "Some people think he's a top-10 pick, some of them think he's going to be (Cleveland Browns linebacker) Barkevious Mingo, meaning a great-looking, fast but underpowered player who ultimately won't live up to what he should."
If the Bucs could trade down and pick up multiple picks in this deep defensive draft while getting an athletic freak in Floyd, then I'm all for it. This is a big week for Floyd, he needs to show his elite athleticism if he wants to go first round.

Koetter Needed Time To Believe In Winston

Dirk Koetter loves Jameis Winston now, but it took some time for Koetter to really believe Winston was the guy. Koetter needed to see in person that Winston was really what everyone else was saying about him. This is why Koetter was a big fan of Mariota first, and really loved what he saw on tape from the Oregon Qb, here is a tidbit from Andy Beniot of the mmqb.si.com who had this first from last year.
This isn’t to say Koetter wields one of the biggest sticks in Tampa. Smith and GM Jason Licht have control over the roster—including offensive personnel—and a few of the Glazer children who took over the family’s franchise in the wake of Malcolm Glazer’s passing in 2014 purportedly make their voices heard as well. Some who know Koetter well speculate that the 56-year-old wanted to draft Marcus Mariota first overall.
This makes sense as coach Koetter is good friends with Oregon's head coach Mark Helfrich who told the Bucs were making a mistake by drafting Winston, per Roy Cummings.
“So Mark is telling me, ‘You guys are idiots. You’re not going to draft Marcus Mariota? You guys are stupid,’” Koetter said. “Well, that’s a guy I’m really close to. So it became clear that both guys had good intangibles, had really good intangibles.
So with that being said Koetter was unsure if the Bucs were making the right choice in Winston, but as time went on during the season the love for Winston grew. Jameis would continue to surprise Koetter, whether it be with his work ethic and desire to win, or diving over guys to get into the endzone. Koetter saw Jameis's heart up close everyday, just by the way he cares about his teammates and how he is a true leader, which is something you cant always see in the scouting report. Koetter is now a true believer in Jameis according to Roy Cummings.
"I just learned so much about Jameis during the season,” Koetter said. “What a worker he is, how much he cares about winning and cares about his teammates. And then on the field, Jameis made some plays with his legs that I was going, “I never saw that coming.’ He never showed me that in (offseason workouts) or training camp or preseason.“I wasn’t expecting him to run and dive over guys in the end zone or to make that run he made in that second Atlanta game. But that’s heart, that’s willpower and desire to win. Now, I’m a true believer that Jameis is off the charts.’’
Koetter is an believer in Winston, and now going into year 2, I see that bond to continue to grow and become a strength for the team. It will be fun to see coach Koetter adapt the offense to Winston's strengths, knowing what he knows now.  Celebrate Bucs fans, this team has a franchise Qb.

Defensive Draft

Jason Licht shed a little light yesterday on what he's thinking about for this draft. He noticed the lack of talent on the defensive side and seems like he's going to attack that area this time, per Roy Cummings.
With that said Licht went on to express that even though he really wants to improve the defense, he won't overlook a better player if he's on the board. Per Rick Stroud
Licht has made it a point to always state that he stays true to his board and doesn't like forcing draft picks . With that said this draft has been labeled a draft filled with deep defensive line talent. Now is that talent top heavy where Licht falls in love with a Noah Spence or Robert Nkemdiche? Or does he value more picks to fill more positions, relying on the depth of the draft? One thing is certain, Jason Licht is a smart man and has made it known he can analyze talent.

Best Kicker in the Draft Likes Tampa

Roberto Aguayo is hands down the best kicker in this draft and possibly the best kicker to enter this decade. Former Florida State Seminole completed 88.5% of his field goals, with a long of 53 and get this, he never missed an extra point.

During interviews today Roberto admitted his liking of the bucs, per Jenna Laine.
The bucs went through their pains last year dealing with the "Leg" Kyle Brindza, who could kick the ball out of the stadium but couldn't kick the easy chip shots. The bucs settled with Connor Barth who I am a fan of yet he doesn't have the leg for the deep ball. Which leads us to Roberto Aguayo. Jason Licht stated earlier this offseason that he wants 5 starters in this draft. That may have been a joke yet taking Aguayo would be taking an immediate starter and big upgrade to what we have on this roster. Let the guy connect with famous Jameis again, I'm sure he's not opposed.

Doug Martin Update

Fresh news from the Combine still shows that there is a strong connection between the Bucs and Doug Martin, evident by Jason Licht's words earlier today, per Rick Stroud

Doug made it clear earlier this month declaring that he "loves Tampa". Tampa absolutely wants you back as well Doug but you have to bend a little with that contract. Jason Licht has total control of this roster and wants to bring Doug back for new head coach Dirk Koetter, only if its a contract that won't devastate the team as a whole. The franchise tag is still an option but hopefully they can hammer out a reasonable contract that can satisfy both sides. Doug, Tampa loves you back so lets get this done.

Koetter Confirms Bucs Will Be A Multiple Defense

Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter spoke earlier this morning at the scouting combine in Indy, and said some interesting tidbits. One of them being that the Bucs will be multiple on defense, meaning they will play 4-3 and 3-4 schemes which opens up the Bucs options when it comes to free agency and the draft. If this is truly the case, then the Bucs will be able to go after the best player and have a scheme in place that suits that players strengths. This is what defensive coordinator Mike Smith was talking about this past January, that it's the coaches job to put the players in the best position to succeed.
"You want to put your players in the best position that you possibly can; that's what coaching is all about. It's about putting them in a spot where they can be successful and be the best version of themselves."
This is smart by the Bucs because they need good football players and shouldn't be looking to handcuff themselves by acquiring lesser talent so that player can fit a certain scheme. This is one of the reasons Lovie Smith was fired, as he was too focused on finding guys that fit his cover 2 scheme. With the Bucs being more versatile in their scheme, they can add any type of player, including one guy in the draft that I was against taking earlier this offseason. That would be Deforest Buckner out of Oregon, who I think is best suited for the 3-4 scheme, but if the Bucs are going to play that scheme, then Buckner makes sense at 9th overall. The offseason is just getting started, it should be another interesting one for our Buccaneers.

Bucs Need Mike Evans To Be Elite

Mike Evans was outstanding in his rookie year making big plays every time he touched the ball. In his first year, he had 68 receptions for 1,051 yards and 12 touchdowns. Evans average 15 yards per catch, and was consistently making plays down the field. Going into the 2015 season, Evans was looking to produce even more, especially with Jameis Winston as his QB. Evans did produce more but struggled with consistency. Evans had 74 receptions, 1200 yards, and 3 tds plus 16.5 yards per catch which are all better numbers besides touchdowns than his rookie year. However, Evans would struggle with his hands as he had games with multiple drops which was very uncharacteristic of the big wideout.

Overall though Evans has been a very good receiver for the Bucs and is still very young as he is only 22 years old, and still has much to learn as a receiver. The Bucs need Evans to become a reliable number one receiver and be that consistent playmaker like he has shown at times during his 2 years. Heading into year 3, I would like to see Evans to continue to mature as a player becoming more polished in his routes and keep playing physical using his size to his advantage. Being in year 2 of Koetter's offense should help Evans plus Jameis will be better as their chemistry should be on point this season.

This should lead to more big plays for Evans which will hopefully lead to more touchdowns for the Bucs offense. With the chance of this being the last year as a Buc for Vincent Jackson, Evans needs to become that elite receiver to help make the offense great for years to come. Also coach Koetter needs to use Evans more in the redzone, he is too big not to be targeted at least once down near the goal line. I expect Evans to have a big year in 2016, him and Jameis are going to be a special duo.

Jameis Says Keep It Simple

During his college days, Jameis Winston was known for going for the big plays and loved to go down the field most of the time. However in the NFL, things are much different for the quaterback as he must look at all of his options and decide in a split second whats the best option for that play. Coming into the league last year, Jameis thought he could replicate what he did in college, thinking that every play can be a big play, which isn't the case against NFL defenses. Jameis would struggle early on as he threw seven interceptions in his first four games, including four in one game against Carolina. After that game, Jameis changed his play and fared much better the rest of the way, ending the season with over 4,000 yards, 22tds and 15 ints.

Now reflecting back on his rookie season, Jameis says he needs to keep it simple and by doing so will lead to more success in the years to come. With Dirk Koetter as coach, Jameis will just continue to get better because he is being told the right things from his coach. Here is Jameis talking about his best lesson from 2015 per mmqb.si.com:
“Something that coach Koetter taught me that really helped me with my whole game: Just do the simple things. I’m such a passionate player, I always want to make big plays and I always want to have excitement. It seems so cliché saying this, but do the simple things and you’ll be OK. Don’t overdo. It just sounds like, OK, it’s like reading the Bible. The Bible tells you from right and wrong and you do that and you will have a good life. But it’s really that easy: Make the simple decision. If you don’t get too over-hyped, if you just make smart decisions and do the right thing, the sky is the limit.”
If Jameis Winston can continue to work on making the simple play, he is going to be one of the great quaterbacks in this league very soon.

Nick Fairley an Option

With free agency just around the corner could the bucs be interested in Nick Fairley? Last year Fairley spent the season with the Rams and didn't record many sacks or stats for that matter yet made his presence know, per ESPN.
Fairley recorded just half a sack in his first year with the Rams, but he was consistently disruptive and earned a solid grade against the run from Pro Football Focus. The Rams have several important pieces on defense including both starting corners headed to free agency, and DT Michael Brockers is entering the final year of his deal. With Los Angeles focused on other players, Wagoner believes Fairley will get a better offer somewhere else.
The former first round pick is a talented big man standing 6'4, 308 pounds and ran a 4.8 40 yard dash, which is really moving for a man that size. He was most productive with the Detroit Lions along side Ndamukong Suh where he managed 5.5 sacks in 2012 and 6 in 2013. Fariley is just the type of big athletic body Jay Hayes wants on the defensive line and someone he could really mold back into the player he was at Auburn where he won the Lombardi trophy for the best linemen in the country. Fairley is still only 28 and is coming of a short season due to a concussion. He will not command a high contract in free agency and may be a signing that will fly under the radar.

Will the Bucs Find a Return Man This Year?

The main topic of discussion this off season for the Bucs has been about improving the defense and rightfully so as that unit was putrid to say the least, but what about special teams? I think its time for the Bucs to get a legit return man, someone who can put fear into teams when they have to punt or to kickoff. Last years returner Bobby Rainey was decent, but was inconsistent and really doesn't provide the explosiveness and speed needed to pose a threat. In a previous post, I had mention that the Bucs should look to sign pending free agent wide receiver Jermaine Kearse, who can add speed to the slot receiver position as well as handle the return duties. However, Kearse might be a little expensive as he is looking for starter type money.

The good news is there are quality options in the upcoming draft which the more effective and cheaper option for the Bucs. I have two favorites in the draft, whom both could instantly make an impact in the return game for the Bucs. The first one is cornerback Cyrus Jones out of Alabama, who is an explosive athlete and displays great instincts in the return game. Jones had a breakout season in 2015 as a returner, taking 4 punts back for touchdowns which is just outstanding. Plus Jones is a pretty decent corner as well and could be a slot corner or starter down the road. Jones is projected to go somewhere in the 5th to 7th rounds.

The second favorite is Texas Tech receiver Jakeem Grant, who is just electric as a player and brings some real juice to the field. Although he is only 5'7 168, he brings toughness and shiftiness for his team, and is always a threat to score with the ball in his hands. Grant has put up respectable numbers during his time with Texas Tech, and could end up being a pretty good slot receiver in time. Grant was mainly kickoff returner, but took back 4 for touchdowns and had a career average of 25 yards per return. I think either Jones or Grant would be instant upgrades for a special teams unit that has been lacking explosiveness. This highlight of Grant is what the Bucs need, this is what I call speed.

Can Robert Nkemdiche Pass Interviews?

Nkemdiche has always been a top rated player with his on the field play, but his off the field troubles will drop him in the draft. Its no secret the Bucs could use a highly talented player of his caliber on the defensive line but is it worth bringing in a head case? Nkemdiche has a long list of incidences courtesy of Saturdaydownsouth.com
Feb. 18 — Denzel and Robert Nkemdiche sued regarding alleged fightOct. 13 — Photo leaked depicting Robert Nkemdiche lighting a bong
Not to mention his most publicized event which have most NFL teams debating picking him in the top 15 or even at all, per ESPN.
According to the incident report that was released Monday, Nkemdiche went through his hotel room window and fell onto a ledge that encircles the building. He then fell from that ledge to the ground.Police estimated Sunday that both falls were about 15 feet. Police also reported to ESPN.com on Sunday that the hotel room window was broken. The investigation into how Nkemdiche fell is ongoing, according to the Atlanta PD.
Talent can only take you so far, there are times you need to step up for your mistakes. Nkemdiche will have to answer for all of his incidences this week at the combine and lets see how he handles it.

On the field Nkemdiche is a mismatch with whomever is in front of him as he can play both defensive end and defensive tackle. He stands 6'4 296 with elite quickness and power. Pairing him next to Gerald McCoy would be a dream if he can keep his head on straight and I'm sure Jason Licht along with every other teams front office will try and figure that out this week.

Chris Long an Option

Just yesterday Chris Long was released by the St. Louis Rams after 8 seasons with the organization. With the Bucs so desperate for pass rush help would they turn to a 30 year old vet who amassed 50.5 sacks his first 6 years but has been injured the past two? Long took to Instagram to voice his appreciation for his time with the Rams and also gave reason to believe he's ready to get back to his usual production.
Just heard that I'm about to be unemployed. I just want to personally and humbly thank the city of St. Louis again for all your support over 8 years. I love y'all so much for sticking with me through the ups and downs. I also want to thank our LA fans, and although I may never join you in SoCal, just know that I'll always appreciate you. Bottom line is- this is a production business. No excuses, the last two years have been sh*t. It's been painful to experience because I care deeply about my performance and my responsibility to my teammates. Before the last two years I'm very proud of what I was able to accomplish in St. Louis. I'm not surprised, but it doesn't make it any easier to leave your family. I look forward to the next chapter. Hungry and a lot to prove all over again. First I'm gonna have a beer. Wishing it shook out differently but eternally grateful, C Long
Long seems to be a professional that understands how the NFL works and is ready to get his performance back on track. Given that his production has dropped greatly because of past knee and ankle injuries his price tag won't be as high as the top defensive ends in free agency.

He would be a perfect pick up given the right price. He has shown production in a 4-3 scheme and brings plenty of knowledge and leadership to a d-line that badly needs it. Theres no doubt in my mind the Bucs will address the edge rush position this offseason wether it be in free agency or the draft and Jason Licht has shown he isn't shy about picking up a veteran as he did with Cherlius Gosder at right tackle. Production is key, so Chris long enjoy your beer and know that the Bucs will be calling very soon.

Bucs Looking For New Fullback?

In the last game of the 2015 season, Bucs fullback Jorvorskie Lane suffered a gruesome leg injury and his days with the Bucs could be over. Lane is an unrestricted free agent and is not expected to be re signed by the Bucs according to Pewterreport.com. The Bucs could look for a veteran free agent, but I think the Bucs should go the rookie route which is cheaper and would be more effective for the long term.

There are couple of fullbacks from this draft class that I like, but I love Georgia fullback Quayvon Hicks. Hicks at 6'2 258lbs, brings power and physicality as he can move defenders back with ease but also displays good hands and ability to run the ball as well. Hicks could be that road grater type fullback similar to Packers fullback John Kuhn, providing power blocking but can be a weapon in short yardage as well. Hicks is projected to be a 7th round pick or undrafted, if he goes undrafted I think he would be a solid addition for the Bucs and could start right away. He has opened holes for Todd Gurley and Nick Chubb, maybe he is doing the same for Doug Martin and Charles Sims next season. Here is a video of him displaying his power and speed when running the football.

Would the Bucs Go Linebacker with First Pick

Jason Licht has made it known that he strongly believes about building through the draft and always staying true to his board. So what happens if on draft day one of the top linebackers falls down to his spot?

Myles Jack and Jaylon Smith may be two of the top 5 players in this draft and both are coming off of knee injuries that may have them drop in the draft. Would Jason Licht take a position that the Bucs don't need? Lavonte David and Rookie sensation Kwon Alexander have two of the three linebacker spots on lock down and the other is up for grabs. But in todays NFL, teams go into so many 3 wide receiver sets, the third linebacker is rarely on the field. So the answer should be an easy no, right?

Well if you think about the defense Mike Smith said he would run, you could argue that anything could happen. Smith has gone on record stating he would keep things much more flexible, per Rick Stroud of tampabaytimes.com
"You can't line up in the same look and the same front every time. So we're going to have a lot of flexibility and identify what players are capable of doing and try to give different looks to the quarterback. Because if the quarterback has time in this league, he's going to be a guy who's going to be able to cut you up so we've got to do a very good job of putting together a package that is flexible, multiple, yet simple for our players and complex to the quarterback and the opposing coaching staff."
"We're going to base out of a four-man front. But again, if you play in a four-man front, you over-shift and you're in a 3-4," Smith said. "If you start in a 3-4 and you over-shift, you're in a 4-3."
So he's leaving a lot of options open with his statement of "flexibility". Looking at the caliber of the two linebackers you could say there is room for discussion. Both of them are natural athletes and can run like a running back. Myles Jack actually played running back for UCLA on occasion. Taking a linebacker of their quality could open up opportunities as both can cover and provide strong rushes. I wouldn't be surprised if Licht took one if they slid to our pick. More analysis of Myles Jack and Jaylon Smith to come to show how they can be a fit.

Should The Bucs Trade Down?

The Bucs have the 9th pick in the upcoming NFL draft which should land them a pretty good player. However, could the Bucs possibly be looking at trading down to acquire more picks in a draft that has good day 2 and 3 value. I think Jason Licht and his staff will consider it as the players they covet could be off the board by the time pick 9 rolls around. Guys like Bosa, Ramsey, Jack, Tunsil, Stanley, and perhaps Noah Spence will likely be picked before the Bucs are up, which makes the move to trade down seem more logical.

Unfortunately it takes two to tango in a trade scenario, and there would need to be a coveted player still left on the board. I could see a team willing to trade up for Deforest Buckner, Jaylon Smith, or Vernon Hargreaves, as they might be higher on other teams boards. If the Bucs do look to trade down, I would try to move down anywhere in the 13-15 range where you would be able to get potentially a good value guy in Clemson DE Shaq Lawson or Ole Miss DT/DE Robert Nkemdiche whom both would bolster the Dline. Then with the extra picks, the Bucs could be aggressive and target certain players. For instance, perhaps a cornerback like William Jackson out of Houston or a playmaker like Will Fuller out of Notre Dame. Still long way to go till the Draft, these are just a couple of possible scenarios that could happen. The good news for the Bucs is that Jason Licht is smart and will take the best route for the team. Here are some highlights of Houston cornerback, William Jackson III.

Bucs Meeting With Former Dolphins CB Today

The Bucs are meeting with former Dolphins cornerback Brice McCain per Jason Cole of BleacherReport. McCain, 29 is a 6 year veteran who has made 19 starts over the past two seasons with the Steelers and Dolphins respectively. Being 5'9, McCain is more suited to play inside than on the outside, but having 19 starts over the past two years, shows his athleticism and being able to do both makes him more valuable. McCain was originally drafted by Houston in 2009, and would shortly become one of the better slot corners in the league. In 2011, he was outstanding with 13 pass breakups, and 2 Int, and recently he has played pretty well.  In his lone season with the Steelers, he started 9 games, and recorded 3 ints along with 6 pass breakups. Then last season with Miami, He had 10 pass breakups, and 1 int.

I think McCain would be a smart addition for the Bucs, and this team desperately needs help at defensive back. McCain would bring experience as he has been in the playoffs before, and has a winning attitude. Much like Sterling Moore, would bring position versatility as McCain can play inside or outside, and would bring competition to the corner position. If the Bucs can sign him to a fair deal, then I'm all for it as any defensive players right now are good additions.

Bucs Comfortable With Safety Position?

As I have stated in previous posts, I feel the Bucs should make upgrades at the safety position this off-season. Last years group was decent as both starters played well at times, but were too inconsistent. Chris Conte, Bradley Mcdougald, and Keith Tandy are all free agents while Major Wright still has 1 more year on his contract. I would re-sign Mcdougal and Tandy as they are decent players with some upside since they are still young.

I don't care for Conte as I feel he is just average and misses on too many plays and should be allowed to look elsewhere. I think there are solid safetys that will be available through free agency or the draft, and could easily become impact players on the Bucs. However, Jason Licht has different ideas as he talked about the safety position this past Thursday with local media, per Rick Stroud of tampabaytimes.com:
Chris Conte did some good things for us and he has a familiarity with (fellow secondary coach) Jon Hoke, who was his coach in Chicago,’’ Licht said, according to Stroud“We will be discussing the possibility of bringing him back, but we still like Bradley McDougald, who we think has upside and we still have Major Wright under contract and we liked what Keith Tandy did in his role for us last year. But it can’t hurt to bring in competition.’’
I see this as a sign that Licht will bring back these guys for the right price but will also look to add new blood to bolster the group. Who knows how new defensive coordinator, Mike Smith sees these guys as he might think they can thrive in his system, and feel no upgrade is needed. Hopefully, the Bucs are smart and add a impact safety or two.

Back End Help

It's still early in the process to be guessing what players teams will be drafting but its still fun to see what people think the Bucs will do. One interesting mock draft was on NFL.com where Daniel Jeremiah, a past college scout for multiple NFL teams gave his two cents on the Bucs selection. He decided on Vernon Hargreaves CB out of Florida and here's his reasoning.

The Bucs need to add a playmaker to the back end, and Hargreaves has very good ball skills.
Its true the Bucs do need a playmaker in the back end of the defense as the team only had 11 interceptions last year and 5 of those were from Lavonte David (3) and Kwon Alexander (2). Half the time the secondary looked lost last year, along with no consistency of keeping the same guys out there. Yes, the defense was a complete mess. Now was that due to no playmakers in the back end or players not being utilized correctly? On many accounts last season players would argue at each other due to not knowing where they were supposed to be. If Mike Smith has his way, he will study up on the secondary that he currently has and learn to use them the right way as he stated during his introductory press conference.
Put your players in the best position you possibly can
Put them in a spot they can be successful and be the best versions of themselves
Obviously these guys didn't understand the zone schemes Lovie installed and couldn't execute them on the field. Lets see if Smith can find ways to simplify the defense to the strengths of his players. There is talent on this team with Alterraun Verner who was a pro bowler in 2013 and Jonathan Banks who has shown flashes in the past. Use what you have on the roster first as there is more talent in the back end than in the front line where Gerald McCoy is by his lonesome. The kicker here is Jeremiah had Noah Spence going one spot behind the Bucs, to the Giants at pick 10. To me pass rusher is the biggest weakness on this team and I'm sure Jason Licht knows that as well and will be searching high and low to fix it.

Its Game Tape Then Interviews!

With the scouting combine less than a week away, we will find out more about all the attending draft prospects, as they try to improve their draft stock in front of all 32 teams. Each prospect participates in 4 main tests which is measurements, medical evaluations, team interviews, and agility tests. They are all important, but I feel the most important is the team interviews, and obviously the players game tape. The interviews are only 15 minutes, but a team can learn so much about a player during that short period, and it can sometimes make a team move that player up the board or completely off it.

Don't get me wrong, I love watching the position drills, and the 40 yard dash but rarely does it affect the team evaluators opinion of a player. Rather it will just confirm their thoughts of a player whether its good or bad. Here is a quote from Jason Licht from last years combine:per Buccaneers.com
“We put some value in it. For me and for most of my scouts - and this goes for scouts in general - the tape is the majority of the body of work that you go off of. But, the drills here and the measurements, the 40 and the vertical, they all can kind of cement our feelings about the player, good or bad.”
Here is more of Licht talking about being cautious about putting too much emphasis on these workouts:
“It’s always a trap. A lot of mistakes have been made over the past in the league with the fast risers, the guys that come out of nowhere this time of year. We like to- usually your purest evaluation of a player is what you’ve seen during the fall. You have some juniors or underclassmen that came out that you’re behind the 8-ball a little bit on. You’re trying to catch up with the rest of the class, but your most pure evaluation comes from what you saw in the fall or on tape.”
Licht is spot on here, as it is all about the game tape, and the interviews are equally important during these workouts and up coming pro days as it allows the team to really get a feel for the player. The team can tell if the player really loves football and is truly committed to this profession through the interview process. That is the one good thing that Jason Licht and his staff have done during his two drafts is finding guys that truly love football and are committed to the job. Lets hope for more of the same in 2016. Cant wait till next week, its going to be fun.

What about Shaq?

All the attention right now is all toward Noah Spence and about how high he's rising up draft boards due to his tremendous showing during the senior bowl. Bucs fans are being frantic already thinking he will not be available at pick 9 when just weeks before he was barely considered a first round pick. Time will tell with Spence but a more complete player that doesn't have all the athletic gifts that Spence has is Shaq Lawson and he would look just fine in red and pewter.

Shaq Lawson, out of Clemson stands 6'3 270 and compiled 12.5 sacks, 60 tackles and 25.5 tackles for loss last year as a true junior. Most buc fans get scared at the thought of a Clemson DE to the late Gaines Adams who was a flop in Tampa, but Lawson is a different player. Unlike Adams, Lawson can play both the pass and the rush. He already has an NFL body and is strong enough to anchor against left tackles. In pass rush situations Lawson shows his technique on many occasions by using his violent and active hands to prevent tackles from locking down on him and pushing him out of plays. The guy played in every game since his freshman year at Clemson and even played in the National Championship game with a sprained MCL, where he ended up with 2 sacks.

His biggest knock is not having the elite speed and get off that Spence has and not many have that but Lawson can bring so much more to the table from day one. As stated before pass rush should be the bucs biggest priority this offseason and Shaq can bring that. He will be on display next week at the scouting combine and so will every other prospect hoping to get drafted. More news and rumors will surely start to fire up.

The Rise of John Spytek

John Spytek realized early on during his Michgan playing days that he wasn't going to play at the next level. So he started scouting the guys around him as a hobby not knowing that it would turn into his future profession. After finishing his college career in 2002, He would join the Detroit Lions as a football operations intern, where he would learn the ropes there for a year before joining the Eagles working his way up the ladder to pro/college scout in 2007. Spytek would be in that role for three years in which he grew as scout in which he wrote reports on 200 NFL players and 250 college players per year.

In 2010, Spytek was hired by the Cleveland Browns, becoming their director of college scouting where he would truly show his high football IQ and talent as a player evaluator.  It was a quick transition, but Spytek adjusted very nicely. Here is Spytek on the 2010 draft: per cantonrep.com
“It was challenging, no doubt,” Spytek said, “especially making the move and all the things that come with relocating. All of a sudden I was in this new role where I had to have an opinion on all the top guys.
“But we all work together so well. We knew it was a huge draft for us. It was a little bit hurried. We couldn’t put in place maybe everything we wanted to but ... I think we did a good job touching on the things that were important.
Spytek helped the Browns get impact players in Joe Haden, Tj Ward, and Shawn Lauvao and would only improve in his next draft. In 2011, the Browns got key players in Phil Taylor, Jabaal Sheard, Jordan Cameron, and Buster Skrine. Spytek added solid talent for the Browns and was quickly becoming a popular name around the league. In 2013, he would join the Broncos becoming an area scout before being national scout in 2014. At age 35, Spytek has climbed up the ladder very quickly and is now the director of player personnel for the Bucs, in which he will be the right hand man for Jason Licht. This guy is a true football scout and just loves football, here is a quote on him talking about Tom Heckert and how they find value in the middle rounds: per cantonrep.com
“This business is just identifying players. Tom has proven to be very good at it. You can either watch players or identify players or you can’t. You can learn and get a little bit better, but if you can’t do it, you can’t do it.
“I mean, it’s easy to put in film on Luck and Griffin and say, these guys are really good. It’s not as easy to continually make really good second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-round picks.
I think the Bucs found a young smart mind in John Spytek, another good pickup by Jason Licht.

Bucs Hire New Director of Player Personnel

Earlier this off-season, the Bucs lost former Director of Player Personnel Jon Robinson to the Titans as he became their new general manager. It was a big loss for Jason Licht and his staff as Robinson was basically Licht's right hand man, and they were together on a lot of key moves made in the draft as well as free agency. Finding his replacement would be tough, as you don't find guys with the background that Jon Robinson has. Initially, I thought Licht would promote within as key guys like Mike Biehl, Shelton Quarles, and Rob McCartney all have done a great job and have a good eye for talent.

However, that has change as of today per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Bucs have hired former Denver Broncos national scout John Spytek to become their new director of player personnel. Spytek, 35 started with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005 and then in 2010 he became the director of college scouting for the Cleveland Browns, where he drafted key guys like Travis Benjamin (above) and Mitchell Schwartz. Spytek has a football background as he was linebacker for Michgan from 1999 to 2002, and got into football operations shortly after that.

This is smart move by Jason Licht as he went with somebody he knows from his time with the Eagles in John Spytek, who has risen up the ranks very quickly, displaying his vast football knowledge. Hopefully, Spytek can apply what he has learned from a winning organization in the Broncos, and help the Bucs become one in the near future. Jason Licht has done it again, as this is just another solid move by adding a smart, young, football minded guy in John Spytek to his staff. Plus it allows Jason to get an inside look from Spytek in how the Broncos were elevating guys for the Draft and to see if their thinking differ at all. With one week to go till the scouting combine, this move couldn't have came at a better time.
