Free Agency Frenzy: Defensive Backs

Yesterday, I wrote about potential free agent defensive lineman that the Bucs should target to help address their biggest need in pass rush. Today, I want to discuss the Bucs second team need and that is finding upgrades for the secondary. Good news for the Bucs is that there are some good quality players at secondary position in this years free agency. Here are my top five targets that the Bucs should have interest in.

1. Eric Weddle,  31  5'11 200  Safety

Weddle has been one of the better safeties in the league over the past decade with the Chargers. He is stout against the run, and can still make plays against the pass. I expect the Bucs to at least call Weddle's agent and try to set up a visit. Weddle would bring a veteran presence to the secondary and provide stable play as well.

2. Sean Smith, 28 6'3 218 Cornerback

Smith has been one of the more consistent corners in the league over the past 5 years, and usually among the league leaders in pass breakups. He has averaged at least 12 pass breakups over the last 4 seasons which is really good. Adding a big cover corner like Smith would be a solid addition for the Bucs, given the fact the Bucs have to face big receivers like Julio Jones and Kelvin Benjamin.

3. Prince Amukamara, 26 6'0 206  Cornerback

Amukamara is an interesting target, but the guy has produce results when he is on the field. He has had issues with injuries, but his talent along with his size and speed is worth the risk. The Bucs shouldn't over pay, but if they can get smart value for him it would be a great addition.

4. Reggie Nelson, 32 5'11 210 Safety

Nelson is very similar to Weddle, and could be the backup plan for the Bucs if they miss out on Weddle. Nelson started his football career in Florida, growing up in Melbourne and went on to be drafted by the Jaguars. A return to Florida could be enticing for Nelson, and could be a impact player for the Bucs secondary.

5. Walter Thurmond, 28 5'11 190 Safety/Cornerback

Thurmond would be another interesting target as he brings position versatility as he has played corner and safety. He played pretty well for the Eagles last year at the safety position and would add more athleticism to the Bucs secondary.

Teams can start talking with free agents tomorrow, and can officially sign them starting Wednesday. Let the free agency frenzy begin.
